Born and raised on the small island of Trinidad and Tobago, Firyal immigrated to Alberta, Canada at the age of eight. As a recent graduate of the University of Calgary, Firyal has earned a BSc. in Environmental Sciences and a BA in Development Studies. She is active in many social justice initiatives in her community, spanning her interests in development, human rights, and various aspects of peace and conflict studies. Her volunteerism has recently opened an opportunity for her to become a part-time employee of the Consortium for Peace Studies at the University of Calgary. She enjoys immersing herself in different cultures, experiences and worldviews through food, reading, travelling and by exploring the diversity of cultures in her own city. She believes that, “travelling is one of the best forms of education. Immersing yourself in the diversity of the world opens your mind and your perspectives; it creates compassion and understanding; it informs and shapes the people we are and who we can become”. After discovering the practice of Ashtanga yoga, FIryal has since strived to incorporate its spiritual practices and principals into her everyday life.
